Seems like a fairly ignorant video, if you ask me. Yes, English is likely to be the closest thing to a “lingua franca” that we’ll probably ever have (anyone notice the irony in using that French statement?). You learn other languages to expand your own understanding of the world, and expand your possibilities.
“In the 1980s we were told to learn Japanese, and look how THAT turned out.” Really? So we should probably just stick in our bubble and not branch out at all then, yes?
Side note: in the next decade the Internet as a whole will have more Mandarin sites than English. Even if it’s only from one part of the world, do you really want to deprive yourself?
