Off campus housing and accommodations

Choosing accommodation when you are not in Taipei yet

If you do not have a person currently living in Taipei who really speaks Chinese, knows your budget and preferences regarding renting an apartment, NCCUIA  SUGGESTS YOU to book a hotel, hostel or the International House of Taipei (Tel: 886-2-2910-3117, E-mail: ih102@ms16.hinet.net) for the first 2-3 weeks of your stay in Taipei. During this time we can provide you with all the information and assistance you need to find a permanent room for the period of your study. This way you will have a chance to select the place that best suits your needs.

For further information the International House of Taipei, please continue reading this page, as there is a section regarding this particular place.

If you want or need other hotel/hostel options, please check the list of places below.

Where to look

There are some places and websites that you can check for single and shared accommodation.

NCCU Student Housing Section located in the Administration Building on the 3rd floor (information provided in Chinese)

Tsuei Ma-Ma Foundation For Housing And Community Services

http://www.taiwanted.com/

http://www.craiglist.com/

You can also look at  the Trash & Treasure Forum. Over there you can find some ads about room for rent

Keep in mind that being in another country, some rooms might be different than the average room in your country.

Bathrooms tend to be smaller; so its very normal for the shower, toilet and sink to be very close from each other in the same room.

People rarely have kitchens in single rooms (studios) since its actually less expensive to go and eat on restaurants when its for 1 person only.

Recommendations:

- Make sure all utilities work: air conditioning, gas, water, hot water, electricity and so on.

- Don’t give money in advance until you have signed a rent contract.

- Some places ask for 1 or 2 month deposit. In most cases you can negotiate it to 1 month.

Taipei Hostel

International House of Taipei (with Shuttle Service)

Before coming to Taipei, you have some option of accommodation. You can live in the dorms, getting an apartment on your own, or you can choose the International House of Taipei. In all the brochures we got it seemed like it was pretty close to campus, it was telling about the shuttle bus that takes you to campus in 10-15 min and cost 15 NTD for one way. So, you can probably think: “Oh, then it’s probably a short walk as well”. But it’s not a short walk. First of all, it is located at up on a hill. So, if you want any food or dinner, you have to take a yellow community bus down to the little centre. Also, if you want to get to campus without the shuttle bus, you first have to take the community bus down to Qizhang MRT station. And then take the G1 bus to NCCU. If you are unlucky with the buses, this can take you an hour. But the shuttle bus is very convenient, so if you can, take this.

The rooms at the International House are ok. You can choose between double room with private bathroom, single room with private bathroom, or single room with public bathroom. The rooms are equipped with bed, mattress, linen, a closet and a desk. It’s the very basic. They have two prices, one is day rent and the other one is monthly rent. The day rent is about 400 to 1350 NTD for the group check-in and the monthly rent is from 5500 to 17000 NTD. The day rent for the single check-in is from 450 to 1500 NTD and the monthly rent is from 5800 to 19000 NTD. They also have a laundry room, where you pay 20 NTD for a one wash load.
